It’s 2013 and my wife is squeezing my hand so hard I thought my wedding ring might
cut through my finger
I had made a big change 10 months before. After spending a decade of my life focused on working with athletes, I shifted to Functional Medicine and was focused on how I could help people use their own body to heal. My wife, Julie, was my first patient. We went from thinking we could never have kids to watching my daughter come into this world.
As I watched Julie holding our daughter, I knew I needed to not only take care of them, but to take care of myself. Diseases like Alzheimer’s run in my family, so I made a promise that I would do whatever I could to make sure I’d never be a burden to them. I have seen firsthand the slow and agonizing process of Alzheimer’s and the negative effects it can have on an entire family.
I discovered functional medicine and never looked back. I had learned that both Julie and I have autoimmunity, so I focused on how I could help other people with similar issues. We raised our daughter avoiding known triggers and supporting her development like all parents do, I just had a strategic advantage since what I do is help people get healthy.

In 2015 a mother that I helped with her autoimmune disease asked me to help her son with Autism.
Always striving to be transparent, I told her that I’d never worked with a child on the spectrum, but I believe the body can heal when given the chance. So I told her I would do everything I could to help. The kicker? Her 8 year old son had never spoken a word in his life. She told me she wants to hear his voice as her eyes start to well up with tears.
About six months later I received a text. It was a video that I had to watch a few times to wrap my head around what I was seeing. It’s her son. And he’s speaking! Different words, different vowels, different consonants!
… But, he is only repeating what his mother says. Why isn’t he answering her? I knew he was doing better, but he wasn’t better.
This pivotal moment is when I learned about the ability to help a brain grow new connections with a concept called neuroplasticity.
I had been attending seminars and studying the replays. I learned more and more and would apply what I learned more and more. I started calling them “Oh, wow!” moments because that is what my clients would say.
The beauty of growing new connections in the brain is that it happens in real time, so we would see changes happen immediately. What started out as hit or miss as far as results started to become more accurate over the years, until I could expect certain changes to happen with certain treatments or exercises.
After all, nothing can fix the body and brain better than it can fix itself.
Fast forward to 2018 on a Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Fast forward to 2018 on a Saturday night in Las Vegas. I am wearing a T-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops to a black-tie dinner event since I only wanted to say Hi to my mentors, and then get to bed. I never feel great the day after staying up late, and my brain health is important to me (and I need to keep the promise I made when my daughter was born).
The awards ceremony starts and I am seeing all these really smart colleagues start getting awards and giving speeches when I hear my name get called for the “Teacher of the Year” award.
My good friend sitting next to me starts clapping and telling me to get up there. So I wipe the stunned look off my face and I walk on stage to get the most coveted award I can think of from two of my biggest mentors that have basically taught me everything I know about the brain… as they’re wearing brand new suits and I’m in flip-flops.
Today, I’m a clinician who helps people get the health results they’re looking for, and I mentor other doctors to do the same. Together we continue learning, teaching, and helping.
